The Hua Xian Chinese Society held its annual Chinese New Year celebrations at the grand Lancaster Town Hall generously contributed by Lancaster City Council and partially funded by Lancaster University’s Confucius Institute.
The event hosted the honourable Consul General of the People’s Republic of China Pan Yundong and Mayor of the City of Lancaster Councillor Paul Woodruff and other distinguished guests.
Over 150 guests were entertained and dined with an evening filled with captivating displays of Chinese culture including the opening ceremony with the Lion Dance followed performances by Manchester Cantonese Operatics Society, Northern Dragons Martial Arts, Korean Gayageum performance by Ahmi Jo, Chinese Calligraphy by Chinese Arts Society, Ancient Dunhuang and Chinese Folk dances by Kai Lan and Chinese Dance by Lancaster University CSSA.
The Consul General and the Mayor both made speeches praising the growing links between Lancaster and China and talked about efforts to improve trade, educational and cultural relationships. The Chair of the Hua Xian Chinese Society and Chinese School Sam Moi Chan presented a speech outlining the Society’s commitment to improve the welfare of people in the Chinese community and promoting Chinese arts and culture by working in close partnership with the Confucius Institute. Dr Brady Liu, Director of the Confucius Institute also took the opportunity to share news of the department’s success so far since it was established.
All the proceeds from the event and the raffle went directly towards funding the Hua Xian Chinese School and other community activities and resources provided by the Hua Xian Chinese Society.
